SP4.2.13 The staging of head and neck cancers at presentation during the COVID-19 pandemic: a regional analysis

Abstract Aim The impact of COVID-19 on cancer presentations has been debated; this audit aimed to examine the stage at presentation head and neck (H&N) cancers regionally during pandemic compared identical time period 2019. Methods Retrospective data was collected across 3 hospitals in South West, identifying all H&N patients discussed Multi-disciplinary Team Meetings between 1st April-10th October 2019 same timeframe 2020. Patients with lymphomas thyroid neoplasms were excluded due separate treatment pathways available. Results There 234 272 identified 2020 respectively. median for 2 both years. commonest oropharyngeal (28%) oral cavity (22%), similar that (oral cavity-31%, oropharyngeal-22%). absolute numbers laryngeal but a greater percentage those presented late (stages 3&4) (47% vs 35%). almost twice as many skin/lip proportionately (20% 12%) number them later stage. Conclusion Overall, not appeared affect cancers, reflecting an on-going continuity care patients. Subgroup analysis revealed skin most adversely affected by pandemic, possibly delayed reduced face-to-face consultations, highlighting need continued appointments part pathways.
